The Wedding Writer
It wasn’t until I was well onto finishing my latest book that I realized, three out of my four books have weddings in them. So what’s new you might think. Well, the weddings play important roles in shaping the stories. In fact, as in the case of my last book, they are the story. You see, it’s called My Brother’s Wedding.
In Kite Strings, the protagonist Mehnaz’s cousin and childhood friend Rehana gets married and I described the process in detail. Then in Blinkers Off, Noor is shooting a documentary at a wedding. I mean, how much more central themed can that get? And now, My Brother’s Wedding.
Okay, note to self. No more writing about weddings. Really.
But as Blinkers Off gets published, let me just reiterate, that it’s been a blast from the very beginning. I keep insisting that I need to have fun and the moment that stops, I can’t do anything well enough. Blinkers Off was one of those books that made me get up at 3 am, switch on the laptop in the darkness and write. I was consumed with the story and how to take it forward and eventually, I knew it all (what was going to happen), but by the time I put it down on paper, I was totally exhausted. Physically exhausted.
With my other books, I haven’t felt that level of exhaustion. More like relief, that okay you guys, your story is over now. Move over and make way for the others. Although for some reason, the lead characters in My Brother’s Wedding played out their parts in my head much beyond what was written for them. (I tend to think about my characters even after I’ve finished the book. I’m a writer. What did you expect? My poor kids and husband? Right)
So that was that. Oh and my author copies of Blinkers Off should be reaching me any time after July 20th. WoW.
